Abstract:

Background and aim: Non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) are one of the most prevalent malignancies of the human. Although the morality rate is not high for these cancers, they may cause high morbility for the patients. In addition to the skin type, factors such as sun exposure, head and neck radiotherapy, inappropriate use of sunscreen and cultural changes may increase the incidence of these cancers. The objective of this study was to determine NMSC in Isfahan.Materials and Methods: We used data of the cancer resistery center for performing this study and the incidence of NMSC per 100,000 populations was determined. Results: Overall 1681 cases were registered. The incidence of NMSC was calculated to be 10.67/100,000population. The most common site for BCC and SCC was middle face. Conclusion: NMSC incidence in Isfahan is lower than west countries although this incidence is 10.67/100,000in a year. It means that 5-6 thousand cases of NMSC occur in Iran each year. We can prevent its morbidity and mortality by early correct diagnosis.

Abstract:

Cervical cancer is one of the significant causes of mortality in the premenopausal period and the second most common cancer in women. According to the screening test and pap smear, a physician can diagnose cancer in the early stage. Therefore, identifying the preferred and novel method of treatment is crucial. This review article performed based on recent data from PUBMED, MEDLINE, ISI, and other reliable databases. Conization or extra facial hysterectomy is appropriate in women with a micro-invasive type of cancer. Fertility preserving surgery such as conization preferred in patients in reproductive age that tend to save the fertility, tumor size is less than 2 centimeters, without invasion to lymph nodes and parametrium and unusual pathologic features such as neuroendocrine. Radical hysterectomy is the preferred method of surgery in stage IA2 and IIB1. Some oncologist surgeons recommend radical hysterectomy in stage IB2 and IIA with small size tumors and without lymph node invasion. For radical hysterectomy in tumors larger than 2 centimeters, laparotomy is the preferred method in comparison to the micro-invasive method. Ovarian metastasis is less common in case of squamous cell histology compare with adenocarcinoma, and ovary can preserve if pathology is squamous cell.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was comparing the stress of breast cancer patients to that of healthy women. A sample of 65 breast cancer patients were selected from "Imam-Khomeini Cancer Institute" (from summer to autumn of 2008). They were chosen from the available patients who were diagnosed with cancer for less than two months. Variables such as marital status, economic status, age and education were taken into consideration in both the experimental and the control groups. Pickle's "life event" questionnaire (1971) was used to assess the stress in those groups. The data were analyzed using t-test. The results suggest that the stress in breast cancer patients is significantly higher than others. Moreover, women who bereaved the loss of a relative, had unwanted pregnancy or experienced divorce had more stress.

Abstract:

Introduction: In radiation treatment of stage one seminoma (SOS) induced secondary cancer in organs at risk (OARs), is late toxicity of major concern. This study aimed to compare the secondary cancer risk in radiotherapy of SOS in two-dimensional conventional (2D) radiation therapy and three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT). Material and Methods: CT scan images of 10 patients with SOS were used to design 2D conventional and 3D conformal treatment plans using 25 Gy in 20 sessions. The life attributable risk (LAR) of the liver, stomach, and colon were calculated using the organ equivalent dose (OED) model for organs in the radiation field and the Biologic Effects of Ionizing Radiation VII (BEIR VII) model for organs out of the field. Results: LAR of OARs in radiation fields such as the liver and stomach were obtained 40% higher in the 2D treatment than in the 3D treatment, while as for the colon, it was 17% lower in the 2D treatment than in the 3D treatment. The LAR values of kidneys located outside the radiation field in the 2D treatment were calculated at 0. 04%. Conclusion: Increasing the prescribed dose (25 vs. 20) as well as the number of treatment sessions (20 vs. 10) resulted in increase in the LAR of the liver, stomach, and colon. Therefore, estimating the cancer risk of critical organs exposed to radiation through examining the effects of dose fractionation and prescribed doses can be used in optimizing of the treatment plan for seminoma, selecting a better treatment method by oncologists, and patient follow-up.
